Westport Harbor is a classic New England saltwater estuary at the confluence of the Westport River and Buzzards Bay in Bristol County, Massachusetts. It is recognized by Massachusetts DMF as part of the Westport River estuary system, among the most productive coastal habitats in southern New England. The harbor draws striped bass, summer flounder, bluefish, tautog, and scup through seasonal migrations, making it a versatile multi-season destination for saltwater anglers. Spot Features: Westport Harbor is a shallow tidal estuary at the mouth of the Westport River where the river fans into Buzzards Bay through channels, sand flats, and eelgrass beds. Striped bass and bluefish are targeted by trolling tube-and-worm rigs or live eels along the tidal current. Fluke anglers drift Gulp rigs or bucktails over the sandy bottom in the channels. The harbor mix of rocky points, sandbars, and eelgrass flats means both shore and boat fishing are viable, though a boat unlocks the most productive water. Seasonality: Striped bass begin entering the Westport River and adjacent harbor from late April through May as the spring coastal migration arrives, the fall run from September through November is equally productive and often yields larger fish. Summer flounder are the primary summer target from June through August, moving into the shallower estuary on feeding tides. Bluefish appear in pulses through summer and fall following baitfish schools. Black sea bass, scup, and tautog are available over rocky structure through the warmer months.
