Climate, weather, and seasons in Lanzarote

The weather in Lanzarote is characterized by mild winters and hot and sunny summers. It is a subtropical climate with constant sunshine and low rainfall, which generally does not exceed 150 mm per year. It has wind currents such as the northeast trade winds during the summer and is also influenced by its proximity to the Sahara Desert and the land breeze, constant and strong wind that comes from the earth with great propulsion.

Temperatures range from 14 °C to 29 °C. The weather in Lanzarote is determined by two microclimates, the northern one which is much windier and more humid, and the southern one which is warmer and drier.

Winter

Winter in Lanzarote goes from the end of December to the end of March. Temperatures range from a minimum of 14 °C to a maximum of 22 °C. There are 10 days of rainfall during this period (55 mm). Nights are slightly cool but rarely fall below 15 °C, making it one of the warmest places in Europe.

  • Even in winter days of constant and strong trade winds can be encountered, but with a much lower probability than in summer.
  • It is possible to have what is locally known as the Calima or sirocco wind, warm and dry winds coming from the African desert and then from the southeast, sand clouds, and a warm sensation. This wind complicates the practice of kitesurfing, especially on the beaches of Famara, in which case the alternative is to move to the east of the island. Here you can learn more about the local winds.
  • It is possible to find windy days during the winter, although less strong than in the summer, to practice kitesurfing or windsurfing, but given the water temperature of 17°C on average, the use of neoprene is recommended.

Spring

Spring in Lanzarote starts at the end of March and ends at the beginning of June. Temperatures during this period range between 16 °C and 25 °C and rainfall are quite scarce with an average of 4 days of rain (13 mm) in the total season and completely dry months.

  • The month of April in particular presents a period of wind that blows more consistently and of higher quality than in other seasons of the year. Since it is not high season it is recommended for kitesurfers and windsurfers.
  • It is an ideal season for beginners since there are still not so many bathers on the beaches and the practice is softer, besides the winds do not reach the same speeds as in the summer.

Summer

Summer in Lanzarote starts at the end of June and ends at the beginning of September. August presents the maximum temperature of around 30 °C and the minimum of the period does not fall below 19 °C. It is a dry season, with the possibility of zero rainfall, and only in September may begin to rain but in low proportions.

  • Trade winds predominate, especially in July, ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing. These are northwesterly winds.
  • The June-August season is the favorite for windsurfing and kitesurfing, the wind conditions are ideal.

Autumn

Autumn in Lanzarote goes from the last days of September to the first days of December. It is the second rainiest period of the year with 43 mm and 7 days of precipitation in the total of the season. With temperatures dropping progressively from 28 °C to 15 °C.

The possible presence of the sirocco wind, coming from Southeast Africa, few possibilities for the practice of wind sports, difficulties arise for reliable weather forecasts.

It is classified as the least windy season, especially in October, when it is not recommended to practice kitesurfing or windsurfing. There are many other places to kitesurf in October.

It is ideal for surfers instead, time of consistent waves from October and throughout the fall.

Best time to travel

The best time of year to visit Lanzarote, for the purpose of kitesurfing and windsurfing, is undoubtedly summer, especially June and July when the trade winds reach their peak. However, months like April in the spring and December in the winter are still interesting options especially to avoid the high influx of bathers during the summer.

Autumn is definitely not the best time to visit Lanzarote, with almost no wind it is not the ideal season for kitesurfers or windsurfers.

General and travel information about the place

Lanzarote is part of the Canary Islands, off the coast of West Africa, and located in the province of Las Palmas in Spain. It is the ideal destination for kitesurfing and windsurfing lovers, with excellent wind conditions during a good period of the year.

Famara beach is a favorite for kitesurfing because it has ideal wind conditions and because it has several peaks in the deepest areas that allow kitesurfers to make pirouettes in the air and execute their movements with ease.

Windsurfers, on the other hand, have two central areas. For beginners Las Cucharas and for the more experienced Jameos del Agua, a place located in the north of the island that allows lefts especially when the trade winds are present.
