Spots by sports and outdoor activities

As applied to outdoor activities, spots are special places for various sports. They can range in size from a particular point on a map for paragliding to the world's biggest ski areas like Dolomiti Superski in Italy, or some national parks where you can go hiking. But it's usually a relatively small place, like a beach for all kinds of surfing, a marina for yachting, or a cave or series of reefs for diving. Another type of spot is a mountain passes, which can be called "outdoor hubs" for many sports at once, including the same hiking and skiing, road cycling and mountain biking, climbing, and others. In the case of skydiving, your spot is the airport from which you take off and where you usually land (as well as the entire sky as you fly). So here are the kind of spots you can find in the Windy.app database:

Weather stations

Weather stations are the world’s main instruments for collecting weather data from which weather forecasts are made. But they also show the weather in real-time. Windy.app contains almost all the official stations in the world that are part of the WMO network — more than 30,000. In the app, they are also another type of spot for which you can see both real weather (wind and temperature) and a forecast for the next 1–10 days depending on the selected weather model for that spot. Like other outdoor spots, they can be found on the Home screen, in the search, on the Weather Map, and on the Spots screens themselves. You can do almost all of the same things with the weather stations, which will be described right below, as you do with other spots.

Nearest spots

Nearest spots and weather stations are spots based on your current location. To see them, you first need to give the app access to it in your phone's settings. You can also make your current location (and absolutely any point on the map) a spot and get a weather forecast for it.

Spots in the Windy.app Community

The spots in the Community section are the spots that other app users have tagged in their photos. This is another good way to find a great spot you are looking for, immediately see how it looks like in reality, read a comment, and in some cases get to know the local outdoor enthusiast (author of the post) if he/she left his nickname in Instagram.

Personal spots

Personal spots are spots and weather stations that you can add to the app if you don't find them in the database. In the first case, select any spot on the map and click "+", to the right of its coordinates, in the second — write to us at [email protected].
