Get the best weather model for the spot. Automatically

We are pleased to announce that the Windy.app now show you the best weather model for the spot each time when you open it.

It happens automatically based on spot location and Windy.app team expertise. We determine it by comparing weather forecasts from the different models with actual winds recorded at weather stations. In other words, if there's a weather station nearby, we compare forecasts with data from the weather station for the last 10 days and show you the most accurate weather model. We also analyze publications on global weather model tests.

If there's no weather station nearby, we'll give you ECMWF model — studies show that it's the most accurate on average across the world.

The new feature will save you time when you just need a quick forecast check or you want to be sure that you're using the right weather model.

Where to find the best weather model

The new feature is located as a new item with the same name — Best model, in the list of weather models under the wind rose on the spot screen. When you open a spot, you see the weather forecast for that model.

For example, on the screens below, the best weather models are as follows: NAM for Los Angeles, USA; AROME for Paris, France; ICON7 for Milan, Italy; and GFS for Tokyo, Japan In the case of Europe, you can also see that the best models for one part of the world may be different. That's because AROME is a special French model, and ICON7 is all-European.

For advanced use cases, be sure to compare the forecasts from all available weather models. There are at least 3 models on each spot.
