All year long, the Windy.app team has been working hard every day to make the app even better for you: more useful, accurate, reliable, faster, and beautiful.
We’ve been improving it through individual small updates and a whole series of innovations in releases for both mobile platforms, iOS and Android, and all three apps of the Windy.app's team at once, including the WindHub.
In case you missed some of the updates and haven't tested them yet, here’s a list of the top 12 updates of the year in chronological order. Go to the News section to learn more about each of the features. There you will also find a complete list of more than 50 major updates of 2021.
We also want to thank you very much for helping with many of these improvements. Without you, it would have been even harder and not as interesting.
Remember that you can always write to [email protected] to comment on a feature or the app in general, send us feedback, share your experiences, and so on.
There is a Fish Weather Profile in Windy.app with a preset of 10+ weather parameters. Now there is Fish Pro with even more useful features for everyone who loves this sport and can't imagine his or her life without it. The profile will help you to get the biggest catch possible.
Now you can check weather history for the past 9 years, including 2020, from the best global weather forecast model, ECMWF. The major difference with the previous forecast is that ECMWF works "backward" in time and processes all available weather observations made in past. The result is comprehensive retrospective weather data for any point on Earth for every 3 hours.
We are pleased to announce that we have just added 7,000 more weather stations to the app in addition to the 23,300 meteostations we already have. So there are now more than 30,000 working stations in the application. In other words, we now have almost every working (not disabled) station in the world, because there are around 40,000 official weather stations in total.
Weather Map is the main feature of the Windy.app. The app looks the way it does, thanks to it. However, the map is not just a map showing wind direction and speed. It has many other useful features, including the one that is available not only in the app, but also on this website. In the update: a new spot search, HD mode, a complete guide to the map, and more.
Great news for yachting enthusiasts: we have added the basic data of 17,000 marinas — sea, lake, and even river ports and docks — in our second app for sailors WindHub with the necessary set of all weather features in a simple and super convenient design. You will get the following information about each marina: exact name, geographical coordinates, phone code with a country code, and much more.
Another big update of weather stations. Now there is no more need to open weather stations' screens to check the current real-time wind speed and direction thanks to the brand new Live Weather Stations feature. Simply tap on the new icon on the Weather Map to activate the feature. Now you see little signs of the different colors with the different numbers and arrows.
Windy.app team is happy to announce that we have released the 10th-anniversary version of the app for Apple OS. It has three brand new and incredibly useful features for paragliders, professional fishermen, and everyone who needs to have the most accurate weather forecast for all possible sports and outdoor activities, and not only.
Introducing a brand new feature that allows you to create a sailing or biking itinerary and view the weather at any point along the way. Using this new Routes with Weather feature, you can better plan a route and avoid unpleasant weather conditions such as high UV Index, heavy rain or a strong wind along the way or, conversely, better prepare for them if you can not change or cancel the trip, such as in the case of long bicycle trips and backpacking hikes.
Windy.app is an app with an international audience of millions of outdoor enthusiasts. So we translated also the site to ten new popular languages at once, so you can use it in your native language. In addition to English (379 million native speakers in the world), the site is now available in Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin Chinese.
In the new version 3.1 (October 5, 2021) of the WindHub yachting app for iOS, you can find an incredibly useful Weather Radars feature. Weather Radars are modern weather instruments that shows precipitation forecast — rain, snow, sleet, hail, and other weather phenomena, but most often rain. It differs from the normal weather forecast in that it is an accurate forecast for a very short time, namely the next 10 minutes.
We are delighted to welcome new addition to the Windy.app's weather models family — WRF for Japan and South Korea. The Windy.app's R&D (Research and Development) team has been working really hard since this summer, and we're now ready to present a tailored numerical model for Japan with 3984 outdoor spots and South Korea with 1578 spots in the Windy.app database, and we hope we exceed your expectations with this new model.
