A super quick user guide to Windy.app for iOS

Hey there! Thank you for installing Windy.app and becoming a part of the community of millions of users worldwide.

The Windy.app is designed to provide adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts with the most accurate, slightly more elaborate weather forecast than just “hot or cold” — one including wind speed, direction and gusts, precipitation, pressure, and other features.

All the main features are available for free. Windy.app Pro gives you access to additional features and more precise forecast models.

Learn how to use Windy.app for iOS in 5 easy and quick steps:

1. Find an outdoor spot
2. Get the weather forecast
3. Check the real-time weather
4. Use the weather map
5. Ask advice in community

1. Find an outdoor spot with information about it

The Windy.app database contains tens of thousands of spots for various sports: kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing, diving, fishing, yachting, and ski resorts, with detailed information about them. There are also spots for outdoor activities in general.

You can find a spot in three ways:

1. On the Home screen of the app, which prompts you for the nearest spots to your current location. But first, activate the Geolocation feature in your phone’s Settings.

2. Through the search on the Home screen and the Weather Map. Simply enter the name of the spot or its geographic geographic coordinates: latitude and longitude.

3. On the Weather Map via visual icon-search. To find a spot faster, remove unnecessary spots (fishing if you are a surfer) in the map settings.

Now, once you have found a spot, go to it and scroll down the screen to the Spot Info section. Here you will find detailed information about the spot such as the best season, the working wind direction, etc. If there is no information you can add it yourself to help other users get to know the spot better and also receive the Pro version of the app for a month to try all its features.

2. Get the weather forecast for a spot

Get a detailed weather forecast for a spot on the Wind rose, Wind bar, and Forecast table right here on the same spot page.

To get the most out of the forecast, follow these three steps in sequence:

2.1 Weather profile

Activate one of the 12 weather profiles with a ready-to-use set of weather elements for your sport via the icon on the right side of the weather models. For example, in the Surf profile, you will have swell forecast, and in the Air profile, you will have winds aloft and so on.

2.2. Weather model

Select the right weather model (forecast source) for your spot from more than 10 main models in the world. In addition to the Best model, which the application will also automatically choose based on your geolocation, there are 3 major global models (GFS, ECMWF and ICON13) and 7 local ones for North America, Europe, and Asia.

2.3 Compare weather

Compare weather forecasts from different models to choose the most accurate one using special Compare Mode feature. In brief, it works like this: if the lines are close to each other it is more trustworthy; if they are far away it is not trustworthy. Why compare the weather at all? Because as you can see yourself, the forecasts from different models differ, sometimes very much.

3. Check the real-time weather

You can check wind and temperature in real-time at the nearest weather station (the main tool for collecting weather data), especially if you doubt your forecast.

On the map, select a layer with different weather elements: wind speed and wind gusts, precipitation, swell) and activate Weather Fronts and Isobars in the Map Settings. Wind barbs and some other features are also available to you here.
